FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ProShield
What type of coating do you put on countertops? +
PROSHIELD is a clear film made of thermoplastic urethane created to protect underlying surfaces from staining and etching, and to preserve a freshly polished look. Thermoplastic is a plastic polymer material that becomes pliable or mouldable at a certain elevated temperature and solidifies upon cooling.
Can the coating be removed? How? +
We use a proprietary process and deactivating liquid that makes removal very simple and easy. The stone underneath will be perfectly preserved using this method. Removal takes about half the time of the original install and can be completed by our Service Department.
Is this coating product only for new counter installations? +
It can be applied on new and previously used countertops. Because the base coat of the film is self-levelling, it will hide the majority, if not all, of any previous etchings or markings. If the surface is heavily stained, we suggest polishing the stone prior to applying the PROSHIELD. The benefit to adding the coating on a new installation is that it preserves the brand new look of the countertop. The benefit to adding the coating on previously used material is that it revitalizes the surface and slows down the aging process.
What about caulking for new and existing installs? +
We can remove and reinstall any caulking, depending on the existing condition of the work. The majority of installations do not require re-caulking. However, if it’s required, re-caulking can be completed at an additional cost*.
Do I have to remove my kitchen and bathroom taps? +
We custom-cut around these items for customers who choose not to remove. Removal and installation is suggested to be completed by the client’s service provider.
How do I maintain my protected surface? +
A simple mixture of water and dishwashing liquid is sufficient for cleaning. Any non-ammonia glass cleaner is very effective as well. Because the film is less porous than the stone, it makes maintenance much easier and safer for the family and kids.
Can I put hot objects on my protected surface? +
We always recommend using a foam heat pad, similar to a drying pad. This will dissipate the heat and weight on your protected surface. Given the thickness of the coating, a heavy pot of boiling water would leave a ghosting effect on the counter, not because of the heat but because of the weight. Using a pad will dissipate this weight over a larger surface and not cause any marks.
Does the product prevent the edges of my countertop from chipping? +
No. If the countertop is hit forcefully it will damage the film the same way it would damage the countertop beneath.
What are your finishing options? +
Our finishing options include a gloss and a matte finish honed.
Can you make a very shiny counter look honed and vice versa? +
Yes, depending on the finish of the edge. If a honed surface has been improperly polished, we can also return it to a completely honed finish.
How long does the coating take to install? +
Depending on the size of the kitchen, installation takes anywhere from half a day to two days.
Where can I see some work of your previous installs? +
You can view our installation work on our website, residentialcoatingsolutions.com, where you can also read testimonials from our satisfied customers.
How can I get this product installed in my space? +
PROSHIELD is installed exclusively through Residential Coating Solutions.
What happens if I damage a section of the film? +
Any areas of film that have been affected can be easily removed and reinstalled. We replace the whole piece edge-to-edge, but none of the non-affected areas.
Can I apply ceramic coating on top of the film? +
Yes. Our dedicated ceramic coating product for countertop protection film provides a super hydrophobic surface. It does not make the surface slippery or oily. Once fully cured, the coating provides an additional barrier of protection for the film.
Does the film discolour over time? +
Wear and tear is normal, like any other surface. But the film we use slows down the aging process of your surface and allows for worry-free daily enjoyment.
Can I notice the film on the countertop while it’s being installed? +
Many clients have a hard time identifying the film once it is installed.
How long does Gloss and Honed PROSHIELD last? +
Gloss PROSHIELD:
For Gloss PROSHIELD, the approximate maximum lifespan is 15 years if used properly. Throughout its lifespan, Gloss PROSHIELD will continue to protect your stone. Overtime, its hydrophobic and self-healing properties may decrease as a result of aging. Additionally, environmental factors such as direct sun exposure may decrease your PROSHIELD’s glossy finish towards the end of its lifespan.
Honed PROSHIELD:
Our Honed PROSHIELD has a similar life span to the glossy version; about 15 years. The honed finish however, is by nature more resistant to scratches, and much like the Glossy finish, may also lose its hydrophobic properties towards the end of its life-span.
Is ProShield safe? +
Both Gloss and Honed PROSHIELD are safe for multi-purpose human use. Our film is made from Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), a durable and inert material used for common products such as Band Aids, medical pouches (IVs), pacifiers, and eco-friendly yoga mats.
PROSHIELD is widely used in both the medical and childcare industries as it does not emit Volatile organic compounds (VOCs). TPU is highly regarded for its non-allergenic characteristics and is free of PVC, rubber, latex, chlorides, and lead.
Does PROSHIELD peel? What happens if it does? +
Our application process includes the use of additional adhesion promoters on all leading edges to effectively minimize the risk of peeling. In the unlikely event that your PROSHIELD does peel, our team will repair and reinforce the area as per our warranty. PROSHIELD peeling is a rare occurrence and is typically a result of improper use.
Is TPU environmentally-friendly? +
TPU is 100% recyclable, BPA Free, and biodegradable in soil within 3-5 years. TPU does not emit any toxins during its degradation process. TPU is referred to as a "plastic to smile about" by medical design engineers, making it a clear choice for our company in comparison to other materials.
NANOCERAMIC COATING
Do you coat floors as well? +
Yes, floors can be protected with ceramic coating.
What is the coating product you use on solid surfaces and appliances? +
Our ceramic coating is a quartz-based permanent protection that eliminates the need for sealing or conditioning. It can be applied to any surface including stainless steel, glass, taps, flooring, leather and any other household surfaces.
What’s the benefit of coating vs. film? +
The film is dedicated to creating a physical barrier to protect your countertops. The coating is an invisible barrier to cover every other part of the house.

Does the coating prevent against hard water spots in the shower? +
The coating minimizes water spots since it’s a hydrophobic (water repellent) product. We would suggest regular cleaning for optimal performance of the coating.
Is there an odour during the application process? +
There is a cleaning scent during installation. We take all steps to minimize the effects of installation process on homeowner. We ensure all tools are localized, and we completely clean your space after installation.
